Agarwood oil is extracted from the heartwood of the agarwood tree. The process begins by cutting into the tree's core and injecting a specific type of fungus. This causes the affected area to turn dark and resinous. It is this darkened wood that is used to extract the agarwood oil. Cultivating agarwood trees typically takes about 3 to 5 years.

Agarwood Oil Production Process:

1. First, the harvested resinous wood is finely ground using a grinder.

2. Next, the ground wood is soaked in water for approximately 7 days.

3. After soaking, the wood is transferred to a distillation pot, where it is steam-distilled to extract the oil. This process takes around 10 days.

4. Finally, the distilled agarwood oil is collected and bottled for storage or sale.

It takes about 70 kilograms of agarwood to produce just 20 milliliters of pure agarwood oil. Wild agarwood oil (from Aquilaria malaccensis) is especially rare and valuable — with just 2% of wild agarwood trees producing the resin — and can retail for over USD 1,500 per ounce.
